Advisers/Chaperones

All students are to be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Advisers are responsible for the behavior and discipline of their students throughout the meeting. Students causing a disturbance or displaying inappropriate behavior will be asked to leave the meeting and the hotel at their own expense.

Advisers/Chaperones Role(s)

  1. While at the meeting, the state’s appointed chaperone is responsible for the behavior of the students from their state.

  3. Review the Meeting Information with your students prior to arrival, stressing the section on Delegate Guidelines and Safety Tips.
  4. T-shirts and jeans are not appropriate dress for these trainings. Advisers are asked to help enforce this policy.
  5. Participants who attend trainings, dressed inappropriately will be asked to return to their room and change to acceptable attire.
  6. Officers are encouraged to wear the official red jacket and uniform for all trainings and Capitol Hill visits. Sunday and Tuesday evenings will be casual. Khaki’s, Capri’s, or cropped length pants are acceptable casual wear, jeans or t-shirts are not acceptable.
  7. Monitor the behavior of your students throughout the meeting.
  8. Make sure your students attend all sessions and stay until the end of each session.
  9. Remind students that it is impolite to walk out during a speaker’s presentation.
  10. Enforce the 11:30 p.m. in-room curfew and quiet time each night.
  11. Remind your students that there are other guests staying at the hotel and to be considerate of their need for quiet and sleep.
  12. Students should observe common elevator courtesy, avoid congregating in the hallways and other public areas during evening hours, and keep the doors to their sleeping rooms closed at all times.
  13. Know where your students are at all times. Do not let them walk out of the hotel without your permission. When walking outside the hotel, students, and adults should be in groups of at least two or more.
  14. Encourage your students to make the most of this training by actively participating in the sessions. Opportunities are just waiting for each member that chooses to take part.
  15. Set a positive example for your students; you can and do make a lasting impression on them.
  16. Encourage your students to be actively involved in the meeting. Make it a memorable and worthwhile experience for you and for them.

****It is critical that advisers/chaperones do not tolerate inappropriate behavior by their students. Any member displaying inappropriate behavior that disturbs or poses a threat to others will be removed from the hotel and/or the meeting at their own expense.
****Adults should collect cell phone numbers of students they are chaperoning in case of an emergency!
